Most people would agree that fashion photography conjures up a wonderfully different world – completely removed from the realities of everyday life – but to make that point in a clever and powerful way is pretty hard. Step forward Madrid-based artist Yolanda Dominguez, whose most recent piece recreated fashion magazine poses in normal situations. The results, particularly the public reactions, are funny, thought-provoking and revealing.
I don't know what took me so long to find this. The woman with the bag on her head in the Madrid alley outside the grocers shop is genius. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Fashion Blooger poses are just as bad and people actually DO do them on the street! The video is so funny. X
ReplyDeleteI think the majority of the poses they're recreating are from images that are about form and shape and aren't supposed to be reflective of the real world. However, head to a sunny eastern European tourist destination and I'm sure you'll find most of the poses recreated for the holiday snaps.
ReplyDeleteI love it. I just love it! Fashion has lost its purpose in many ways I think and has become something quite detached from reality. That's not to say that fashion cannot be art and, therefore, have models assume unnatural poses for some of the shoots. The problem is that it's not some more 'artsy' shoots, it's the vast majority of them lately and most of the covers. Are the magazines art magazines or fashion magazines? Are the readers artists or everyday people that want to look good whilst going about their daily lives? I think this video addresses that quite beautifully and it's a bit ironic that an artist criticizes the 'artsy' poses like that.

I love this video, I especially like to flower bed pose when the litter picker comes over!!! It just shows how different the fashion world is from real life.
