OUR PICK OF PRE-FALL 2011 - FASHION EDITOR AT LARGE

Posted by Fashion Editor at Large

Anna Dello Russo, I thank you for inspiring this post.  There is nothing like popping a cut-out of one's oversized head onto an outfit to judge its suitability for the wardrobe, (and to laugh quietly to yourself at said images while colleagues look on with a concerned frown.)

Now onto the serious business of how good the pre-fall collections are for AW11. Designers and brands are definitely putting more time, thought and effort into them. In fact, when I do have enough spare cash to buy from catwalk labels, I rarely, if ever, buy catwalk pieces. I buy pre. Not consciously, it's just what I gravitate toward. All the Celine I bought last season was pre, for example. This will happen again next season. To my mind these clothes are just more wearable for everyday life. They are a stylish fashion statement to go back to time and again. Much preferable than buying a catwalk piece that has massive impact, but that can be worn less often because it is so memorable. (Of course I do make exceptions!) So here are my top ten buys from the pre-fall collections.

There is something so appealing about this sleeveless denim coat by Alexander Wang. Think of the variety that can be achieved with the sleevage!

I am in love with the work of Peter Copping at Nina Ricci. His work has a fragile toughness that is so appealing and chic. I would dare to say Copping is my favourite designer at this moment.  Also he is English, not that this should be a moot point, however its a qualifier for me.

The last couple of Balenciaga collections were fabulous, but to my eye hard to wear. The pre-fall on the other hand was full of great, approachable  pieces. Balenciaga designer Nicolas even reprised his Alsatian head intarsia knit that I remember from the mid-noughties. The structure of this dress is elegantly bold and can work as an amazing fashion statement all year round.

As a child my favourite teddy was Rupert the Bear; this is the only way to explain away my obsession for plaid trousers. These from Celine will be mine.

This zingingly vivid violet outfit by Derek Lam is addictive.

Does Phoebe Philo actually know me and study the workings of my mind? This is my dream work outfit.

Really like how Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy has given a sexy twist to the new covered up austerity sweeping through fashion. There seems to be a competition to see how much of a woman can be covered up, and to edit sexiness out of fashion altogether. This look thumbs a nose to that with its transparent layer.

Oh Alber! Beautiful fashion in motion.

When I was a kid my favourite two TV shows were Magnum and Charlie's Angels re-runs. My favourite Charlie's Angel was Sabrina the boyish one whose wardrobe consisted of flares and tight tops. This is an "uber-Sabrina" look by the other Peter, Peter Dundas of Pucci, my second favourite designer of the moment. This makes me want to leap off pavements busy going places...

Big respect to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen whose collection The Row is super-sophisicated and modern dressing in the masculine mode that is so wildly popular in the contemporary collections. Hands up: the above look is how I dress almost every day, and I would very much like to update my basics with these from The Row.

OUR PICK OF PRE-FALL 2011 - FASHION JUNIOR

Posted by Fashion Junior at Large

Following on from Fashion Editor's post about Giles and his thoughts on the current pre-fall collections, we decided to do our own personal edit of the looks. The pre-fall collections are so desirable, it was nigh-on impossible to whittle them down to just these few looks, but here are my dream outfits:

Celine - It was something akin to torture to pick one outfit from the collection, which was a chic, Sixties-fest, but this outfit came out on top as my ideal daywear. I do enjoy a bit of houndstooth.

Who wouldn't want to be dressed as a sparkler, if Erdem was creating the outfit? Fireworks are are an inspired move for the master of print, and I like the 'subversive librarian' feel of a blazer and maxi skirt combination.

Monochrome, velvet, sheer billowing sleeves and a massive witchy pendant: yes please, Lanvin.

How beautiful? No-one does romantic like Valentino. I think I would goth-up this frock though, with dark make up and heaps of jewels, just to balance out the frou-frou. Then I would wander around pretending to be Kate Bush.

Perfect pink by Derek Lam. This minimalist frock, in my opinion, is just crying out for a 'Jackie O circa 1967 hairstyle' and a stunning necklace. But that might be my inner drag-queen talking. Regardless, this is a knock out frock in the colour of the season.

Up next, the Fash Ed get's the big-head treatment as she models her favourite pre-fall looks.

PS. With thanks to Anna Dello Russo...

GOLDEN GLOBES 2011: THE FASHION LOWDOWN

Posted by Fashion Editor at Large

I woke up at 6.30am wondering who wore what to the Golden Globes. This has a lot to do with the fact that I laid down a few informal bets with my friend Brix Smith-Start last night just before I went to bed and she went off to do all night coverage for Sky 1. I said "long", "Jil Sander". "bright colour" and "Marchesa." Brix was betting on colour, sparkle and oodles of Marchesa.

Marchesa did figure strongly. However only one of the dresses is featured here (on Sandra Bullock) because the rest are too overblown. My choices below represent where I think fashion is going in silhouette, colour and mood and two looks of where it has definitely been and  now gone.

The fashion mood has shifted from sexy to super-long and modestly covered up from neck to toe to wrists. The look is austere and more Miss Haversham than Jessica Rabbit. I love it, it feels so right for now.

Thank you to the Daily Telegraph Golden Globes Hits & Misses pages this morning where I picked up these images. Disclaimer: I have made my own choices - hence what may be a MISS for the Telegraph is a HIT for me!

The peachy colour of her dress worn next to her tawny skin and blonde hair is just lovely. The silhouette is divine. Minimalist long, by Calvin Klein of course. My favourite fashion package of the evening.

The Telegraph don't like this. I LOVE IT. Fringed red Versace on January Jones (who is the face of the brand for SS11) is jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

If I had been invited to the Globes, I would have worn this Marchesa dress, that is if Sandra would let me.

Angelina looks fabulous for a change in crystal encrusted emerald green full length gown by Atelier Versace. Forest green will be a really strong colour for spring 2011.

Anne Hathaway in Giorgio Armani Prive, the haute couture side of Armani's business. It perfectly treads the line between elegant and glamorous.

Scarlett Johannsson in fairytale Elie Saab

Tilda in Jil Sander skirt from SS11 collection and white shirt. She looks like a Miss Haversham for 2011.

Clare Danes in Calvin Klein

Leighton Meester in Burberry Prorsum pre-fall for 2011, with a Louis Vuitton SS11 bag. This is a young, cute way to wear long. The split in the dress gives it elegant sass, and the cute puff sleeves give the whole look a youthful innocence.

FASHION NO-NO'S NOW

Nicole Kidman shows how out-of-fashion the one shoulder dress looks these days.

Megan Fox demonstrates how the super-tight "sexy" dress has totally lost its fashion mojo. At long last, I say.

Maximalist GENIUS! The dress is by Dame Vivienne Westwood. Who else?
